Which Seats Should You Choose when Flying Pregnant?

If there is a choice, sit on the aisle seat when awake so you can get up easily, and window when you are sleeping so you have something to lean on. You can easily do this if you are traveling with someone and you can snag a 2 person section. If the only options are 3 seaters, make sure you reserve the seats towards the back of the plane (yes – the back) and the window and the aisle seat. Why? Because the middle seats on the back of the plane are usually the last ones to be filled, so you might get lucky and no one might grab those seats. If you are on a full flight and someone does fill that spot, then I can guarantee you that that person would love to switch with one of your middle or aisle seats.

Also, once you get to the airport, let the agents know you are pregnant. They weren’t too accommodating to me most of the time, but it doesn’t hurt to ask if they have any extra legroom seats available. I’ve had the most success on the airplane when everyone pretty much boarded to ask the flight attendant. Bonus if you notice an empty seat that you want and ask if you could sit there.

NOTE: If you do let them know you are pregnant and you look super pregnant, they may ask you for a doctor’s note showing you can fly. So on to the next topic on what to bring.

What to Bring on board – Pregnancy Flight Essentials

  • Big water bottle. Because of the #1 rule – hydrate!
  • Snacks – I get hangry. Hangry + Pregnancy = everyone better watch out. But most of all, you don’t want to be hungry on the plane and hate all the snack options that the airline has. Bring all your cravings.
  • Comfy sweater (if it’s too hot, you can use it as an extra pillow, and if it’s too cold, you can use it as a blanket or wear it.) Bonus points if the sweater has zipper pockets to put little things in.
  • Chapstick – this is always essential for me to travel. The dry air just makes your lips so chapped, especially when you are pregnant.
  • Check for entertainment options before you check in – sometimes you would have to download the airline’s app on your phone/iPad for entertainment so prepare for that before you fly!
  • Dr’s note saying you can fly.
  • All your necessary medications – prenatal vitamins, and any other off the counter and prescription meds you are currently taking. I like to use a small pill holder for travel in general, but it’s great to get a smaller one for just the flight, or just put them in a small ziplock bag just for the flight.

What to Wear on the Plane while Pregnant

  • Compression socks to keep your circulation flowing.
  • Your flowy-est softest maxi dress (I get these basically in every color – it’s so comfy even when you aren’t pregnant!) with comfortable straps. This way, there’s no worries about being tight around the stomach and you could go commando if you want. Lol Strapless maxi dress is a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen.

Sleeping on the Plane while Pregnant

One of the most uncomfortable things to do is to sleep on the plane. Scratch that, it’s sleeping on the plane while you are pregnant. There’s no way around it, you can’t get comfortable no matter what, but these things will at least get you a little more comfortable than without having these things.

  • Comfy travel pillow – so worth carrying around if your flight is long enough to sleep. I personally like the ones with the small foam-like balls. Don’t even bother with the inflatable ones.
  • Eye mask & earplugs – again, don’t go with the cheap ones. Get the best material out there, you deserve it.
  • Sleeping pills: If you are comfortable with it, ask your doctor which sleeping pills you can take if any. Take them when you are boarding the plane on flights you need to sleep (especially the first long one). I was able to take Unisom while pregnant and took it many times when I flew. Don’t take it before boarding because if your flight is delayed, or (knock on wood) canceled, you will be super drowsy and can’t deal. (I AM NOT A DOCTOR. Just expressing my personal experiences. Please consult a doctor before taking any medications.)

There you have it!

I hope this prepares you for your babymoon! Just enjoy your last peaceful flight without a baby in your arms. As much as you might think how painful it is flying while pregnant, it’s nothing compared to flying with an 18-month-old… 🙂 Enjoy!
